The B.C. Coroners Service has confirmed that 42-year-old Lucia Vega Jimenez was found hanging from a shower stall in the immigration holding centre at the Vancouver airport, on Dec. 20, 2013.<\/p>\n

She died one week later in a Vancouver hospital without regaining consciousness and was removed from life-support with her family present, says the coroners service in a written release.<\/p>\n

News of Vega\u00a0Jimenez’s\u00a0death coming to light more than a month after it happened has angered many in international and local communities.<\/p>\n

The B.C. Civil Liberties Association says it wonders what took so long and whether there have been other in-custody deaths with the\u00a0Canada\u00a0Border Services Agency that have not been reported.<\/p>\n

Vancouver-based advocacy group No One Is Illegal has launched a petition calling for a\u00a0full\u00a0independent civilian inquiry into Vega Jimenez’s death.<\/p>\n

Arrested for unpaid transit fare<\/strong><\/p>\n

A written release from the group said Vega\u00a0Jimenez had a job as a hotel worker in Vancouver when she was arrested last month over an unpaid transit ticket, transferred to jail, then sent to the\u00a0CBSA\u00a0holding cells at the Vancouver airport to await deportation.<\/p>\n

By midday Wednesday, nearly 500 people\u00a0had signed the petition<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The petition, which also calls for a\u00a0comprehensive review of migrant detention policies,\u00a0is addressed to nine people, including\u00a0CBSA\u00a0officials, Public Safety Minister Steven\u00a0Blaney\u00a0and Prime Minister Stephen Harper.<\/p>\n

The CBSA says its holding facilities are regularly monitored by the Red Cross and the United Nations Commission for Refugees and meets international standards.<\/p>\n

Richmond RCMP, who were called to investigate, said\u00a0they have determined there is no criminal wrongdoing involved in Jimenez’s death.<\/p>\n

No One Is Illegal said\u00a0it is\u00a0planning\u00a0a vigil<\/a>\u00a0to honour Vega\u00a0Jimenez on Friday afternoon in front of the\u00a0CBSA\u00a0offices in downtown Vancouver.<\/p>\n
