This seminar provides an overview of Canada’s legislation and policy relating to migration (both forced and voluntary) and explores the opportunities and challenges facing policy-makers in the context of domestic law and policy, as well as global norms and regimes. We will examine current debates regarding international migration, including issues related to state sovereignty, demographic trends, migration control and human rights obligations. The course is divided into three sections: the first examines the global context for migration law and policy; next, we will explore Canadian migration law, policy and practice; the third section highlights the interlinkages between domestic and international contexts by focusing on Canadas position on contemporary issues and debates in global migration.
