This project will explore the interrelationships between irregular migration and repressive measures targeting migrants including asylum seekers. In particular, it will examine how such measures affect the incidence of and negative effects associated with irregular migration. The project aims to better measure and improve the effectiveness of the Canadian asylum system, and counter-terrorism strategy and practice in this context by drawing on the innovations, practices, and experiences of foreign governments, such as the United States, Australia, and select countries of the European Union.

Proposal submitted to the European Commission’s Jean Monnet Programme. Pending funding (competition results will be announced in July 2013), this research project will allow the group to:

Establish an international interdisciplinary group of experts on the policy consequences and human rights impacts of asylum policies within the EU, four member States (the Netherlands, France, Italy, Greece), two candidate countries to the EU membership (Croatia and Turkey), and two non-member States (Canada and the US);

Implement a first multidisciplinary and comparative research project on recent asylum legislation and policies of the EU and the above-mentioned countries with a main focus on detention, removal, safe country and biometric measures.

Plans to apply for a SSHRC Insight Grant to explore the interrelationships between irregular migration and repressive measures targeting migrants including asylum seekers.

The aim will be to better measure and improve the effectiveness of the Canadian asylum system, and counter-terrorism strategy and practice in this context by drawing on the innovations, practices, and experiences of foreign governments, such as the United States, Australia, and select countries of the EU. The project will use a strong international and comparative law perspective.
