INTERCEPTION OF HUMAN BEINGS ON THE HIGH SEAS: A CONTEMPORARY ANALYSIS UNDER INTERNATIONAL LAW

The article presents an analysis of the interception of human beings such as potential asylum-seekers and illegal migrants on the high seas under international law. It presents a historical and contemporary perspective of the issue and the international laws that justify the interception. It discusses the legal constraints on operations of interception including the limitations stated under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and other relevant treaties including the Protocol against the Smuggling of Migrants.
