International migration has become a topical issue in public, political and academic debates both in Europe and elsewhere. The Master’s programme in Migration and Ethnic Studies deals with the different forms, causes and consequences of international migration, and gives particular attention to the impact of globalisation, the regulation of international migration by authorities at different levels and the responses of international migrants to the changing opportunity structure. The programme also addresses issues of immigrant incorporation, assimilation and diversity in various social fields, including the labour market, education, politics and religion. An overall goal of the programme is to educate future world citizens by providing a general knowledge of theories and concepts as they have been developed in the field of migration and ethnic studies, as well as a thorough knowledge of theories and concepts of disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to more specific topics. It also aims to develop students’ ability to critically evaluate theories and empirical studies in the field of migration and immigrant incorporation and to engage in (public) debate on topics related to this field.
The Master’s programme in Migration and Ethnic Studies provides students with a solid theoretical, conceptual and methodological foundation in the social sciences. It offers students an interdisciplinary approach to major contemporary migration concerns. The historical and comparative dimensions emphasised in the majority of the courses train the student to analyse social and cultural issues in from various perspectives and to locate them in their various sociological, political and cultural contexts. The combination of empirical studies with theoretical reflection and reading provides the intellectual tools and skills that students need to better analyse and deal with the complexities of today’s world.
