Handbook on preventing unnecessary immigration detention, IDC

The International Detention Coalition (IDC) has launched new research: There are Alternatives: A handbook on preventing unnecessary immigration detention

The handbook is based on two years of research in partnership with La Trobe University, Australia and found humane and cost effective mechanisms that prevent unnecessary and damaging immigration detention. The five-step Community Assessment and Placement (CAP) model outlines mechanisms and examples from around the world that prevent unnecessary detention, implement immigration law through mechanisms that do not rely heavily on detention, and effectively support individuals in the community.

The IDC launched the handbook at the UN level in Geneva on May 13th 2011. Launches in all regions will follow later this year: http://www.idcoalition.org/regions
